Commotion in the ocean
I would highly recommend Travis as an instructor for learning kiteboarding. Why? Having over a decade of career-related experience in skill training others myself, I can tell you that Travis has the both the high experience level, the patience, and the personality type necessary to teach others. That is founded on what I would call an encyclopedic knowledge of the sport. And sure... It helps that his rates are reasonable and that he brings a selection of equipment for you to try out.

Because there is inherent danger present in any extreme sport, you want an instructor whose priority is the culture of safety, not just youtube subscribers... This is your guy.

But don't take my word for it. Call this guy and get out on the water! Also... ask him how Captain Hatteras is doing.

Kite boarding in the Outer Banks
I had a 3 hour lesson with Travis on August 16 2019. This was not my first lesson. Travis was my 4th instructor and the best. He is very experienced and very patient.
He showed me how to recover when disoriented. How to relaunch the kite after crashing .He also showed me am alternate way to launch due to a physical limitation of my right leg.
Travis is an excellent instructor with years of experience and has the ideal disposition for

Good lesson
Travis is a kind and patient instructor. I have been working on kiting for a while and he was able to provide me with many new tips and practice in a safe environment.  The Magnetic release board seems safer but I wonder if it would work for everyone as any mistake you make seems to result in being released from the board. I guess that’s great practice to keep you from learning bad habits!   Good selection of equipment and good prices.

Interested in getting into the sport I bought a used trainer kite from these guys with the bar and harness. I had no idea what I would need but they were super helpful and answered all my questions and even offered to Skype call to help me rig it up correctly so I could get it flying. These guys truly went way above and beyond, would highly recommend!

So much fun!!!
Travis is an excellent instructor.  If you want to learn to kite board safely,  efficiently, and cost effectively then Travis and Captain Hatteras are you're guys.  Travis is super patient, doesn't spend time on stuff you already are doing proficiently and doesn't skip important steps either.  This is a very doable sport, but without good instruction you're either not going to get it, or get hurt, or both.  If quality instruction, time and cost are important to you then this is an outstanding choice.

Flexible and personal
I chose Travis over the big commercial shops for having a bit of flexibility with my timing constraints. He taught my friend and I the basics in a safe and calm environment. He has alot of equipment on hand which help with your rate of progression. We would certainly recommend him and would try to take more lessons with him.

All around awesome guy and tight with his business!
I live on the Columbia River in Oregon and found Travis through a Craigslist ad for a plethora of used Kiteboard bars, one of which (2011 liquid force bar) is my perfect fit, I know because I've worn out a couple already. He was amazingly responsive and mentioned (with absolutely no pressure) that he was also making his own line of bars if I'd prefer to try that instead, which I did. Unfortunately, after cutting it down a little myself and riding it a few times I discovered it was not quite a fit for me because I love riding with no hands on the bar and am even perfecting my own series of no-hands tricks so I need a movable but fixed stopper ball. Travis was so understanding he graciously allowed me to return the custom bar in lieu of a nice beefed up set of custom length skyvines for my old liquid force bar and gave me gobs of really smart useful advice throughout the process. Take it from a 13 year kiter who bought a house on the Columbia river so I could live the life: this dude is real smart, respectful and ridiculously generous with all of his amazing experiential wisdom! Thank you so much Travis!  : )
